Attractive faces

A team at the University of Liverpool’s School of Biological Sciences is currently performing a detailed study of how human faces are perceived by members of the opposite sex. The findings so far seem to suggest that a majority of heterosexual women favour men with slightly effeminate feautures; often signs of stability and caring. A more masculine face is often linked to good genetic qualities - despite the higher levels of testosterone increasing the chances that the man will have an affair.

The more common are the more attractive. Moving down the female images they are increasing in averageness (that means how similar a face is to everyone else in a population. Average can be the opposite of distinctive). Average faces are difficult to recognise in a crowd but are also surprisingly attractive. Many tv actress are like that! It is thought that humans also make an average face in their brain - a face that represents the average of all the faces a person has encountered!
Universal emotions. Can you tell which face is happy and one is angry? No problem, isn't it? In fact there are 6 proposed basic emotions: Happy, Angry, Sad, Disgust, Surprise and Fear. These facial expressions are recognised across all cultures.
Familiarity. One of the images is the original Mona Lisa's face and the other is mirror reversed... but which image do you prefer?
People like both faces and other images they have seen before - that they are familiar with. It has been suggested that this effect may be responsible for popular beliefs about partners looking alike or partners being selected that look like our parents. Choosing our partner. Researchers think that our choice of partner would look similar to us, thus increasing the chances of your children also resembling us. "Nice couples" ussualy resemble each other. The researchers are currently exploring how faces influence the success of relationships.
